Game, Set, Match in Heaven

Getting a message from beyond the grave is shocking enough—but getting your upcoming sports schedule from a ghost is on a whole different level.

Ethel and Mildred, both 90 years old, had been inseparable best friends and fierce tennis partners since high school. When it became clear that Ethel was nearing the end of her life, Mildred visited her deathbed every single day.

During one of their final chats, Mildred leaned in with a burning question. “Ethel, we’ve loved tennis our whole lives. Do me one favor: when you get to heaven, somehow let me know if they have women’s tennis up there.”

Ethel nodded weakly. “If it’s at all possible, I’ll find a way.” Shortly after, she slipped away.

A few nights later, Mildred was jolted out of a sound sleep by a blinding flash of celestial white light. A familiar voice echoed through the bedroom: “Mildred… Mildred…”

Sitting up straight, her heart pounding, Mildred gasped, “Who’s there?!”

“It’s me, Ethel! I’m calling you from heaven,” the voice replied. “And I have some incredibly good news, but also a little bit of bad news.”

Relieved and excited, Mildred said, “Oh, tell me the good news first!”

“The good news,” Ethel beamed, “is that heaven is an absolute tennis paradise! All our old high school buddies are here, we’re all young again, the weather is a permanent, beautiful springtime, and we can play as much as we want without ever getting tired!”

“That’s fantastic!” Mildred cried out. “It’s beyond my wildest dreams! So, what could possibly be the bad news?”

Ethel sighed. “You’re scheduled for mixed-doubles this Friday.”
