A 𝐩.𝐞.𝐫.𝐯.𝐞.𝐫.𝐭.𝐞.𝐝 plumber installed a spy camera in customers’ toilets ‘to meet his 𝐬.𝐞.𝐱.𝐮.𝐚.𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬’. The man who was later found to have i.n.d.e.c.e.n.t images of children has been 𝐣.𝐚.𝐢.𝐥.𝐞.𝐝 for one year.
James Hulme, 57, had been employed to do some plumbing work at a woman’s house in June 2018 in Nottingham. At that time, he covertly set up a camera system in an attempt to sᴘʏ on her.
When the woman spotted the camera and reported him to police, officers discovered this man had also filmed several other customers by 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 in their bathrooms.
More 𝐜.𝐫.𝐢.𝐦.𝐢.𝐧.𝐚.𝐥.𝐢.𝐭.𝐲 came to light when police searched his address in Sherwood, Nottingham, and found 302 𝐢.𝐧.𝐝.𝐞.𝐜.𝐞.𝐧.𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧 on his home computers, and images of 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬.𝐞.𝐱 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬.
Hulme pleaded guilty and was 𝐣.𝐚.𝐢.𝐥.𝐞.𝐝 for 12 months at Nottingham Crown Court.
His offending came to light in 2018 when he was working at the property in Nottingham.
The householder had hired him for some plumbing work and confronted Hulme when she found a 𝐬𝐩𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚 attached to a sink in the downstairs toilet he had installed.
Hulme admitted being responsible and fled the property along with the recording device when the woman called the police.
Officers immediately set out looking for Hulme and arrested him after tracking him down a short time later.
During Hulme’s police interview, he admitted digitally recording the customer and ‘five or six others’ but he denied accessing 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚.𝐛.𝐮.𝐬.𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥.
PC Jonathan Cooper, who investigated this 𝐜.𝐫.𝐢.𝐦.𝐢.𝐧.𝐚.𝐥.𝐢.𝐭.𝐲, said: ‘This was a gross breach of trust and invasion of privacy in a premeditated manner for his own 𝐬.𝐞.𝐱.𝐮.𝐚.𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
‘Hulme will have to live with this shame for the rest of his life. These offences were gross and his victims will no doubt live with this forever.
‘I hope this outcome serves not only as a comfort to Hulme’s victims and their families, but also as a warning to others who might be tempted to engage in 𝐯.𝐨.𝐲.𝐞.𝐮.𝐫.𝐢.𝐬.𝐦.
‘His 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 for making 𝐢.𝐧.𝐝.𝐞.𝐜.𝐞.𝐧.𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 of a child and possessing extreme 𝐩.𝐨.𝐫.𝐧.𝐨.𝐠.𝐫.𝐚.𝐩.𝐡.𝐢.𝐜 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 should also serve as a stark 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 to others that such 𝐜.𝐫.𝐢.𝐦.𝐢.𝐧.𝐚.𝐥.𝐢.𝐭.𝐲 does have consequences.
‘Behind every one of these sickening videos and images is a vulnerable child being 𝐬.𝐞.𝐱.𝐮.𝐚.𝐥.𝐥.𝐲 𝐚.𝐛.𝐮.𝐬.𝐞.𝐝 by an adult in various parts of the world. The physical and emotional impact of that 𝐚.𝐛.𝐮.𝐬.𝐞.𝐝 can and does have a devastating impact on those children as they grow older and we are determined to protect other children from a similar fate.’
