Her son makes fun of his schoolmates who shop at thrift store, so she makes him wear $20 worth of cheap clothes to school for a week
One Georgia mom came up with a clever plan when she noticed her 13-year-old son was acting “entitled” and making fun of his peers at school who shop for clothes at places like Goodwill.
Her solution to teach him a lesson? Make him shop at the very place he criticized.
In her viral Facebook post, Cierra Brittany Forney shared on how she taught her teenage son about being modest and not judging others based on their appearances.
According to Forney, her son was making snarky comments about his schoolmates who shop at Goodwill and acted like a spoiled child.
“I don’t tolerate that,” Forney wrote. “Today, he took his own ($20) to the goodwill to buy clothes to wear the entire week to school. Whatever he found is what he would have to wear. He isn’t happy and shed a few tears but I firmly believe in 15 years he will look back and laugh at the day his Mom made him shop at goodwill.”
So, to teach him a lesson, she made him take his own $20 to spend on a Goodwill wardrobe that he selected, and forced him to wear those clothes for a whole week.
He protested and cried, but at the end of the day he eventually relented and took his punishment on the chin.
Before posting the photo, she asked if it was OK for him to share it and she stressed that it wasn’t a punishment, more of a learning opportunity for her 13-year-old to appreciate what others have
But more importantly, that degrading others to make yourself feel superior is bad behavior.
“I want to teach my kids that money isn’t everything and if you have to degrade other people because of where they shop, then you too will shop there.”
Forney told TODAY Style that she wasn’t trying to humiliate her son, but to prove to him that money isn’t everything — and that bullying is never OK.
As for her as a mother, what is important is that her son has learned a lesson from his recent attitude.
“My son has learned a valuable lesson from this AND he is rockin’ the button-up shirt he bought from the Goodwill with PRIDE today!!!”
