Incredible picture reveals moment a mother delivered her own baby – still inside his amniotic sac and 8 weeks premature – on the front seat of her car
When the pain woke her on August 5, Raelin Scurry thought she was experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions. At 29 weeks pregnant, it was too early for labor.
To start with, she wasn’t too concerned about the pain but 45 minutes later, as the contractions became more intense, she decided to go to hospital.
They increased in intensity and she decided to shower and go to the hospital — just to be safe. She soon realized that she and fiancé, Ean Vanstory, needed to leave immediately.
Miss Scurry was en route to the hospital, when she realized she had just given birth after she pulled her pants down and felt her baby’s head.
The baby was originally still, sparking panic. But he eventually ‘rubbed his face’ using Miss Scurry’s thumb and ‘pulled his little hands up’.
Miss Scurry said this reassured her that he was healthy.
The journey to the hospital took seven minutes. They were greeted by staff running to their car.
The baby, named Ean Junior or EJ, was born en caul, which means inside the amniotic sac. These births are extremely rare but occur more often in premature births.
When they arrived at the hospital, Vanstory went inside to explain that his fiancée just delivered their baby in the car.
Medics opened the amniotic sac Ean Jamal, who weighed 3lbs 1oz, was in.
Miss Scurry added: ‘He’s doing wonderful all things considered. I know he’s going to be an awesome little man! He is truly a miracle baby. We are so blessed to be his parents.’
Ean needs to stay in the NICU at Magee Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh for another three or four weeks, but the family feels grateful that he’s doing so well. Scurry shared the photo of her holding Ean en caul and the photo went viral. While she’s amazed that she delivered her own son, Scurry feels she learned more about herself.
