A husband was obliged to take two paternity tests after the first proved he was not the father of the child he was raising, despite his wife’s insistence that he was, putting his marriage at risk.
A husband turned to Reddit to discuss a heated disagreement he had with his wife regarding their child, which put their 10-year marriage at risk.
The husband met his wife in college; they had been together for 14 years and married for ten. He agreed that the past year had been difficult, but they were gradually working to repair their connection.
Despite the ups and downs, the man had only positive things to say about his wife. “She is beautiful, supportive, kind, classy, and all-around amazing as a wife,” he said.
After surviving the difficult period, the wife found she was pregnant, and the husband was ecstatic. But for some reason, he couldn’t shake the notion that the child might not be his, especially given the obstacles they’d had to face in recent months.
Nonetheless, his wife stated that she would only retain the baby if he was completely dedicated to their marriage, which the husband swore he was. Throughout the pregnancy, however, he was haunted by the fear that he was not the father.
When the child was born, the man had been so fixated on the idea that he wasn’t the father that he struggled to be happy or even hold the baby boy. For his peace of mind, he finally asked his wife for a paternity test.
What Happened after He Asked for a Paternity Test?
The woman was upset by her husband’s request, but told him to do it if it made him feel better. So he did, and two weeks later, the findings confirmed his suspicions: he wasn’t the father.
He raced inside the home, yelling and cursing, wondering how his wife could do this to him. But she didn’t react. “She’s sitting on the couch the entire time, trying to console the baby. This got me further upset for some reason, so I kicked her out immediately away,” he admitted.
The wife contacted the next day to tell him that the baby was indeed his. She invited him to take a second exam with a different company, which he accepted because he felt he had nothing to lose. He believed that a second test would strengthen his argument in the divorce.
The spouse underwent two further tests, each of which indicated that he was the father. This was a big relief, but when he called his wife to share the good news, she informed him that she would not be moving back in.
The wife could not get over how he treated her, from when he asked for a paternity test to when he kicked her out of their house. She told him his reaction to the false paternity test “disgusted” her, so she was filing for divorce. However, she was willing to allow him to see his son.
Can the Husband Still Save His Marriage?
The husband stated that he believed his reaction was justified, considering how astonished and outraged he was about the erroneous test, but he never put a hand on his wife.
He recognized that some of his behaviors were inappropriate, but blamed them on his emotions. He understood why his wife was unhappy, especially because he was the father the entire time, but he thought she did not try to understand his side of the story.
He intended to speak to her to see if there was any hope for their marriage, but in the meantime, Reddit commenters had a few things to say.
