One of the topics that cause online debates among parents is the use of child leashes – harnesses or wrist tethers designed to prevent children from wandering off or getting into dangerous situations. Opinions on this matter vary widely among parents.
Recently, a stay-at-home mom, known as TikTok user Alexis (@alexishealth), faced online criticism after images surfaced of her using a leash on her child while grocery shopping.
Alexis, a former behavioral analysis therapist and mother of two daughters, shared a video of herself and her daughter after their shopping trip.
The video quickly went viral, amassing nearly 13 million views and sparking a heated debate in the comments section.
Using social media presence to raise awareness about child endangerment, in one video, Alexis can be seen fastening a leash to her young daughter’s hand. She captioned the clip with, “I’m tired of the world being this way, but I’m never tired of protecting my girls. I’m okay looking like a crazy mom. As long as my babies are safe, and thanks to everyone, I freaking love this thing.”
In the comment sections of the video, some internet users criticized Alexis and questioned her parenting choices.
“I hope they leash her when she’s 50,” while another person stated, “I hate those.”, one comment wrote.
In a follow-up video, Alexis explained that the leash is particularly useful for children prone to running away, citing her experience as an ABA therapist.
According to Alexis, children with autism often exhibit elopement behavior, which involves wandering away or running off from parents or their surroundings. According to Alexis, using a leash can prevent traumatic situations for both the child and the parent.
The debate surrounding the use of child leashes continues, with varying opinions on their benefits and drawbacks.
