As a vital part of our lives, relationships provide us with a sense of connection, support, and companionship. Yet, not all relationships are healthy, and certain behaviours can destroy a relationship. In her recent Instagram post, licensed therapist and mental health educator, Summer Forlenza suggested top behaviours that destroy relationships
1. Avoiding Conflict
Conflict is normal and can be healthy and safe. Learning to express your disagreements and reactions fairly is a foundation of healthy relationships.
2. Prioritizing their needs over your own
When you do this, you create an environment that is ripe for resentment. Express and prioritize your needs in your relationships.
3. Arguing while dysregulated
Trying to resolve conflict when you’re dysregulated (highly upset, anxious, or angry) is trying to resolve conflict without all of your brain power. Take a break, self- soothe, and come back when you are both regulated and grounded.
4. Dishonesty
The foundation of healthy relationships is trust. Lying or distorting the truth compromises this foundation.
5. Abandoning other relationships
Nurturing multiple relationships in life (whether friends, family members, or partners) will actually enhance healthy relationships.
