Why You Should Love Your Spouse More Than Your Kids

Love is immeasurable, and that in the end, we love our children to the same extent that we love our spouse; and in a different way than how we love our spouse. I think it’s more a matter of priority.

So why should a spouse have priority?

1. Your spouse is really the only person in the world you choose

Because your spouse is really the only person in the world who chooses in a mutually exclusive and committed way – they are the only person who is yours and yours alone. We don’t choose the family we come from; and we don’t choose who our children will be. We can choose our friends, but they are not exclusively ours in the same way that a spouse is.

2. Your spouse is your teammate.

My companion. We work TOGETHER to love our children well, raise our children well, teach our children well, and enjoy our children well. But it is HE who remains my mate…not they.

3. Your spouse is your best friend.

They are my babies. My little loves. My responsibilities. My work. My blessings. Amazing gifts, designed by God. But… they are not my best friends. They are not who YOU go to relax, laugh, vent, unwind, and dream with. He is.

4. Your children will grow up and live their own lives, and you will be with your spouse again

Your children are yours for a while, but then they grow up and live their own lives, and you are left with your spouse again. Where would that leave you as a couple, if you have neglected each other while raising your children?

5. Happy parents make happy children.

Children happiest when their mothers were happy with their partners and/or romantic relationships.

To Raise Happy Children, Put Your Marriage First. As we break our backs for our children, our marriage and self-fulfillment go out the window as our children become more demanding and dissatisfied.

Remember that loving your partner is a way of loving your children.
